Tip #1

Answer your calling. Whatever it may be. Painting, drawing, architecture, anything you love to do, whatever you may be gifted it, do it. They call it a gift for a reason.

Tip #2

Do what you love to do because you love to do it. Your best work will always come from your heart.

Tip #3

There are no mistakes with artwork. They’re only adlibs and sometimes they make a piece of artwork that much better.

Tip #4

Remember the rule of thirds. When composing a picture, keep the rule of thirds in mind and know when to break it.

Tip #5

Experiment. Try new things with your work. Just have fun with it and explore the endless possibilities with your work.

The rule of thirds.... when composing a picture you typically want your subject to be in thirds... my camera has a nifty little option where I can put lines on my LCD screen to divide it into thirds, looks like a tick tack toe board. When I play with depth of field, the area of my picture that is in focus I place in one of the intersecting points of those dividing lines, but the camera likes to auto focus in the middle, so I focus, then hold my button half way down to move the subject in the picture to where I want it, then snap the picture. Using the rule of thirds works well with drawings and paintings too.

My purple swamp here I used the rule of thirds throughout the whole picture, just about everything in it can be divided into thirds. I don't always use this rule, but it works well with composition.

I find dividing by 3 is more difficult. I would rather go by 2 and 2 again until I am satisfied with the detail necessary. So a grid could have 16 squares.

It is more difficult, but I like my results better when I use the rule of thirds. It's an old art rule, but I learned it from a few artists that have made it big :-) I think they teach it in art schools, but the most schooling I've received in art was in junior high and a semester in high school and that was it. Everything else I've learned on my own, or by asking successful artists.

Great tips and as you stated there are times to go outside the gudelines and rules of photography in order to create your own perspective.
